Emergency services rush to scene as rail services are suspended and passengers describe scenes of chaos following crash.
A major emergency operation is under way following a collision involving two passenger trains in the Bedford area, prompting widespread disruption to rail services and a large-scale response from emergency crews.
Firefighters, police officers and ambulance teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, where efforts are continuing to assess the situation and assist those involved. The full extent of any injuries has not yet been confirmed.
Passengers on board the trains have described frightening moments immediately after the impact. Peter Knapp, who was travelling in the front carriage of one of the trains, said the collision felt like “a bomb explosion.”
“I felt like I'd been in a bomb explosion,” he told BBC News. “There was an enormous bang and everything happened very suddenly.”
Another passenger, Shola Mene, described scenes of confusion inside the carriage. “It was like a big bang, then people flew from their seats,” he said.
The incident has caused significant disruption across the rail network. East Midlands Railway has suspended all services to and from London St Pancras for the remainder of the day, while Thameslink has confirmed that all lines between Luton and Bedford are blocked. Both operators are urging passengers not to travel and to seek alternative arrangements where possible.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was “deeply concerned” by reports of the collision and thanked emergency responders for their efforts.
An investigation into the cause of the incident is expected to begin once the scene has been made safe.
