A dramatic stoppage-time goal from Sammy Fisher-Diaz gave Eynesbury Rovers a 1–0 win at Yaxley, securing a tenth-place finish and completing the league double over their local rivals.
Eynesbury Rovers ended their league campaign in style with a dramatic late winner against local rivals Yaxley.
Sammy Fisher-Diaz struck deep into stoppage time to seal a 1–0 victory, confirming Rovers’ tenth-place finish in the United Counties League Premier Division South and completing the double over the Cuckoos.
The decisive moment came in the 98th minute, when Fisher-Diaz – introduced just after the hour mark – delivered a free kick from the right flank that found its way into the far corner, sparking celebrations among the travelling side.
Earlier, the match had taken time to come to life on a sunny afternoon. Harry Chetwood went close for Yaxley in the opening stages, while Max Kimpton fired off target for Rovers after cutting in from the left.
Rovers created the better openings before the break, with Adam Wedd trying his luck from distance and Victor Osobu setting up Dean Dummett, whose effort was comfortably saved.
At the other end, goalkeeper James Hoskins was called into action, dealing with efforts from Spencer Haskins and Marley Hamilton, including a smart block at close range.
Yaxley’s best chance came shortly after half-time, when Jordan Venters volleyed narrowly over the bar following a defensive scramble.
Rovers controlled much of the second half but struggled to find a breakthrough, with Kimpton, Scott Joseph, Osobu and Michael King all unable to hit the target.
But with the game heading for a goalless draw, Fisher-Diaz produced the decisive moment in the eighth minute of added time to secure all three points.
Despite the defeat, Yaxley avoided relegation after results elsewhere went in their favour.
The two sides will meet again later this month in the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final at St Ives Town, with kick-off at 7:45pm on Wednesday 29 April.
