VJ Day 80 | St Neots Remembers

Wreaths laid at St Neots War Memorial on VJ Day.

Today marks 80 years since Victory over Japan Day — the moment in 1945 when Japan surrendered, bringing the Second World War to an end.

While VE Day in May celebrated victory in Europe, the fighting in the Far East continued for several more months. VJ Day honours those who served there, endured harsh conditions, and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Across the country, communities have gathered to remember. In St Neots, veterans, residents and civic leaders, including Mayor Cllr Richard Slade, came together at the town’s War Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of reflection.

At 12 noon, Black Cat Radio also joined the nation in a two-minute silence on air, paying tribute to all who fought and those who never returned home.
