Motorists are facing significant delays today (Saturday 26 July) following a serious collision on the A1 near Wyboston, combined with planned weekend closures linked to the A428 improvement works.
A1 Closed Following Serious Collision
Police have closed the A1 in both directions near Wyboston after a serious road traffic collision was reported shortly before 8am. The northbound carriageway is shut between the A428 junction and the B645 turn-off for St Neots. The southbound carriageway is also closed at the A428 junction.
A diversion route is in place via the Tempsford Interchange, St Neots Road, and the A428, though local routes remain congested. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and allow extra time for travel.
Police confirmed to Black Cat Radio at 11:00 that the closure is expected to last for “several hours yet”.
Planned A421 Closures in Place All Weekend
Separately, National Highways has closed key sections of the A421 until 5am on Monday 28 July as part of the ongoing A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet upgrade works. The following closures are currently in effect:
- A421 eastbound between Cardington Interchange and Black Cat roundabout
- A421 westbound between Black Cat and Renhold Interchange
Diversions are in place via the A603 and A1 through Sandy. Temporary traffic measures are also in place around the Black Cat roundabout, including restricted access to Bedford Road.
These works were pre-planned, but traffic has been heavier than expected due to the A1 closure and diverted vehicles using surrounding routes.
Buckfest: Local Event Bringing Additional Traffic
The popular Buckfest music festival is taking place today in Buckden, attracting a large number of visitors from across the area. Festivalgoers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey, as nearby routes are particularly busy due to the ongoing closures and incident-related diversions.
Summary
- Avoid the A1 near Wyboston and Black Cat roundabout if possible
- Expect delays through St Neots, Sandy, Great Barford and local village routes
- Allow additional time for travel to and from local events
- Follow signed diversions and check traffic updates throughout the day
We’ll continue to monitor and provide updates as the situation develops.
