In the first week of the new Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) scheme, council officers issued 54 warning notices to motorists in St Neots alone.
Across the wider district, more than 250 warnings were handed out, with officers visiting 90% of Huntingdonshire’s wards.
The council has confirmed this warning period will run for four weeks, focusing on educating drivers and raising awareness of the change. From early September, anyone breaking the rules could be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
The move follows approval from the Minister for the Future of Roads earlier this year, switching routine parking enforcement powers from the police to the district council.
The council says the change is designed to tackle dangerous parking, improve road safety, and keep streets accessible for all. Police will still handle the most serious cases, such as vehicles blocking pedestrian crossings or causing immediate danger.
Cllr Julie Kerr, Executive Councillor for Parks and Countryside, Waste and Street Scene, said:
“We’re pleased to confirm that Civil Parking Enforcement is now operational across Huntingdonshire. Our priority is to keep streets safer, ease congestion, and make sure parking is fair for everyone. We’ve already had residents thank our enforcement officers for their work, and we’re seeing improved access for emergency vehicles in some areas as a result.”
