St Neots Women’s 1s secure first win of the season

St Neots Hockey Club Women’s 1s have picked up their first points of the new season with an impressive 3-1 victory over City of Peterborough 3s.

The visitors arrived with a 100 per cent record and took the lead on the counter-attack, but Saints quickly responded through China Saywell, who converted from a well-worked penalty corner.

Saywell struck again following sustained pressure to give St Neots a 2-1 advantage at half-time.

Peterborough pushed for an equaliser after the restart, but Saints caught them on the break, with Kira Herbert finishing past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1.

St Neots controlled the remainder of the game to secure their first victory of the campaign.

Elsewhere, the Men’s 1s suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Newmarket 1s. Andrew Pope equalised shortly after half-time, but two further Newmarket goals secured the points for the visitors.

There was better news for the Men’s 2s, who returned to winning ways with a dramatic 2-1 victory over March Town 2s.

Joe Bertram put Saints ahead before March equalised with just three minutes remaining. St Neots immediately responded and were awarded a penalty flick, converted by Iain Moor to secure a second successive home win.

The Men’s 3s also made it back-to-back victories, winning 3-1 away at Cambridge Nomads 3s, with goals from Nathan Read, Mark Lincoln and debutant Kevan Shotter.

The Women’s 2s were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Cambridge City 6s, with Annie Cerveno scoring for St Neots.
