FC Peterborough 3 Eynesbury Rovers 2

Cole Butler

Eynesbury Rovers returned to FC Peterborough after beating them 3-2 on the opening day of the season, but the match was ordered to be replayed after Rovers fielded an ineligible player despite checking with the FA and being given the all clear. However, this time it was the hosts who came out on top.

Match reporter: Graham Mills

Peterborough took a fourth minute lead when a low ball from the right by Derick Dadzie, across the six yard box, was fired into the roof of the net by Domingos Sanha. The two combined again in the 24th minute when this time Sanha beat Chris Gough with a 16 yard shot after Dadzie had played him in.

Rovers had enjoyed plenty of possession without creating too many clear cut chances. Max Kimpton had a shot saved by Sam Edwards before he scored his first goal of the season on the stroke of half time. Rhys Thorpe earned Eynesbury a corner when his shot came off a defender. Lewis Lynn took the kick short to Kimpton and in turn he played it back to Lynn. His cross into the box was headed down by Thorpe and Kimpton was on hand to shoot past the keeper.

Peterborough had two early second half chances but Gough saved a Vitor Vaz shot then Leon Rist fired over from the edge of the box before Eynesbury came back into the game. They created chances but could not find the net. Thorpe set up Jordan Nicholson but he shot wide whilst a long range Lynn shot was held at the second attempt by Edwards. However, in the 76th minute Peterborough broke and scored their third goal through Jack Bedwell, just eight minutes after coming on for Jake Austin. Just two minutes later though the visitors pulled one back when Lynn set up Butler inside the penalty area and he controlled the ball before firing home.

Rovers then went all out for an equaliser but it would not come as Lynn whipped a free kick wide and Dean Dummett headed inches over from a corner kick. Sammy Fisher-Diaz cleared the bar by inches with his 18 yard shot whilst Butler had an effort blocked and Thorpe was off target with his late chance.

Next up for Rovers is a home UCL Premier Division South fixture when they welcome O.N. Chenecks to Hall Road on Saturday 7th November, kick off 3.00pm.
