Eynesbury rue penalty miss

Unbeaten in their last 9 encounters against Godmanchester, in the last three seasons, Eynesbury would have been disappointed not to make it 10.

Having trailed 3-0 after 56 minutes Eynesbury were offered a lifeline when Jordan Nicholson was brought down in the box and Luke Young netted from the 67^th minute spot kick to pull a goal back. 

Hopes were raised further of another goal when Adam Wedd was dragged down inside the area as Lewis Lynn delivered a free kick into the box. Jordan Brown took the penalty kick but his effort was pushed out by Jack Mason. In the ensuing scramble Brown found the net but he was ruled offside.

Had that gone in with seven minutes plus stoppage time left we would have been in for an interesting finale. However, Eynesbury’s only worthy chance after that incident came from a stoppage time Oskar Ciach shot which came off a defender and behind for a corner kick.

In the first half Eynesbury enjoyed most of the possession but it was Godmanchester who created the chances. Andre Williams’ shot was held by James Hoskins and a low ball into the penalty area was put over the top by Matty Allan, who was also denied by a fine Hoskins save.

For the visitors a low drive by Michael King was diverted behind for a corner whilst Young and John Herd both shot wide from the edge of the box. But two minutes from the break a ball through the centre put Craig Gillies clear and he raced on to plant the ball past Hoskins.

Eynesbury almost equalised in first half stoppage time when a Herd throw in was flicked on by Riley Barratt but Nicholson’s effort was held by the ‘keeper.

Two minutes into the second half Jordan Nicholson set up Lewis Lynn but his shot was saved by the diving Jack Mason. However, two goals in five minutes put the hosts in control. Gillies claimed his second goal on 52 minutes when he headed home from a Declan Rogers corner and just four minutes later a swift counter attack ended with Allan crossing to the back post for Williams to net.

They came close again but Jamie Shorts’ close range effort was straight at Hoskins. Young’s third league goal in as many games offered hope for the visitors but it was not to be.
