Eynesbury Rovers v Atherstone Town - 1st August

Despite Jordan Brown continuing his rich vein of form with his fifth goal of the season Rovers were unable to overcome Atherstone Town as they went down 3-1 at Hall Road.

Both sides came into this match with two wins from two games and something had to give. Unfortunately for Eynesbury Atherstone, who finished third last season, proved too strong and on this early showing must be considered as one of the favourites for promotion. Before the match a minutes’ silence was held in memory of former player John Carroll who had passed away recently.

Rovers suffered an early blow losing Victor Osobu in the fifth minute to an ankle injury. Jordan Nicholson came on in his place. Eynesbury created the first chance of the game when Babacar Camara set up Dan Hammer inside the penalty area but he shot over.

After Jack Edwards had miscued an effort wide for the visitors he set up Roan Newey who hit an unstoppable shot from 16 yards to give the Adders an 18^th minute lead. Chris Gough, in the Rovers goal, made two fine saves to deny Ryan Harkin, turning his low close range shot behind for a corner, and later Tom Smith, as he blocked his effort from a Ryan Quinn cross.

Eynesbury had chances as Brown curled his shot just wide of the far post, Max Kimpton had a shot blocked, Nicholson shot over from 25 yards and Camara shot straight at the ‘keeper from 20 yards. However, the pressure paid off when they fashioned an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time. A long throw in from the left by Dan Hammer reached the back post where Brown had the simple task of knocking the ball home.

After the break two Atherstone goals took the game away from Rovers and frankly they did not look like getting back into the game. In fact, two very good saves from Gough kept the score line down. The visitors regained the lead in the 63^rd minute when Harkin fed Edwards inside the box and he slotted the ball home. Ten minutes later it was 3-1 to Atherstone as they hit Rovers on the break and Chris Cowley scored to round off the move. Soon after Gough denied Harkin with a block from close range and towards the end of the match he tipped over a header by Riley Davoile.
