‘Coming home’: Eynesbury Rovers complete signing of Rhys Thorpe

Eynesbury Rovers have completed the signing of striker Rhys Thorpe from AFC Rushden & Diamonds, in what the club is describing as something of a homecoming.

Thorpe is no stranger to Eynesbury, having previously played for Rovers before going on to establish himself as one of the area’s most prolific strikers.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a particularly successful spell with St Neots Town, scoring 54 goals in 108 appearances for the Saints and playing an important role in their promotion-winning campaign.

He moved to AFC Rushden & Diamonds during the summer, stepping up to play at Step 4, but has now made the move back to Eynesbury Rovers.

Speaking to Black Cat Radio, Rovers chairman Mark Spavins said the club was delighted to have secured his return.

“It’s great news for Eynesbury Rovers. Rhys is a proven goalscorer and one that we definitely need. He’ll improve our firepower up front.”

But for Spavins, Thorpe’s return is about more than simply adding goals to the team.

“We’re so glad to have him back. He’s a great player and a lovely lad to have around the club.”

Supporters won't have to wait long to see the new signing either. Thorpe joins with immediate effect and is set to be involved when Eynesbury Rovers host Yaxley on Tuesday evening in the United Counties League.

Kick-off at the Alfred Hall Memorial Ground is at 7.45pm on Tuesday 15 September.
