A man in his forties has died after being shot by armed police following a lengthy overnight incident in Bedford. The police watchdog has launched an investigation.
A man has died after being shot by armed police following a major incident in Bedford.
Bedfordshire Police were called to reports of vehicles being damaged in Aylesbury Road shortly after 10:40pm on Monday night.
Officers attended and found a man in his forties who had barricaded himself inside a property and was making threats.
Specialist armed officers, police negotiators and emergency services remained at the scene overnight in an attempt to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
Police say that shortly after 9:30am on Tuesday morning, the man presented a weapon before officers fired.
Medical teams, including crews from Magpas Air Ambulance, provided emergency treatment at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead shortly before 10:30am.
Several nearby homes were evacuated during the incident, although police say there is no ongoing risk to the public.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation, which is standard procedure following any fatal police shooting.
A police cordon remains in place while enquiries continue.
