Barford Road to close for more than three weeks

Barford Road at Little Barford will be closed around the clock for more than three weeks as work continues on the A428 Black Cat improvement scheme. The closure will mean there is no through route between St Neots and Tempsford via Little Barford.

Motorists are being warned of a lengthy road closure near St Neots as work continues on the major A428 Black Cat improvement scheme.

Barford Road in Little Barford will close from 9pm on Friday, September 25 until 6am on Monday, October 19.

The road will remain closed 24 hours a day throughout the works, although access will be maintained for residents living within the closure area.

National Highways says the closure is required to allow drainage and final tie-in work to be carried out safely as part of the new road alignment.

In a letter to Abbotsley Parish Council, a National Highways spokesperson said: “Please be advised, there will be no through route between St Neots and Tempsford via Barford Road, Little Barford Road during this period.”

Work during the closure will include removing the existing road surface, installing deep drainage, kerbs and the road base, constructing a new access to residential properties and completing final surfacing and white lining.

The closure forms part of the ongoing A428 Black Cat scheme, which includes transforming the Black Cat roundabout into a new three-tier, grade-separated junction.

Diversions will be in place throughout the closure.

Traffic travelling northbound on the A1 will be directed to continue north and join the A428 eastbound at Wyboston.

Drivers travelling westbound on the A428 will continue west before joining the A1 southbound and leaving the A1 at Tempsford.

National Highways warned that the timetable could change depending on weather and operational requirements.

It added: “We appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we carry out these essential works.”
