If you’re driving between Bedford, St Neots, and Cambridge this week (commencing Monday, April 13, 2026), you are entering a busy period of construction for the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet upgrade.

Expect heavy traffic and several overnight/weekend closures as crews work on the new dual carriageway and the redesigned Black Cat roundabout.

🏗️ A428 & Black Cat Upgrade (Major Works)

The most significant impact remains the ongoing transformation of the Black Cat Roundabout.

• A1 Southbound Closures: The A1 southbound from Wyboston to the Black Cat Roundabout (and continuing to Tempsford) is scheduled for a full carriageway closure ending 5:00 AM Monday, April 13. If you are commuting early Monday morning, check for lingering tailbacks.

   

• A428 & A1198 (Caxton Gibbet): National Highways has scheduled a series of essential road closures and diversions starting Friday, April 10, through to May 16, 2026. This includes works at the Caxton Gibbet roundabout and connecting junctions.

   

• Public Update: There is an online information event this Thursday, April 16 (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM) hosted by National Highways for residents and drivers to hear the latest progress.

   

🚗 A421 & Bedford Area

• A421 Westbound: While many major overnight closures were completed in February/March, expect periodic lane closures and narrow lanes between the Renhold Interchange and the Black Cat Roundabout as crews finalize street lighting and CCTV installation.

• Local Bedford Roadworks:

  • Nicholas Way: Planned works (Cadent) are scheduled from April 13 to May 4.

     

  • Melloway Road & Nelson Road: Utility works (Anglian Water) starting April 13/14 through April 16.

  •
