Eynesbury Rovers were beaten 5–2 by United Counties League Premier Division South leaders Nuneaton Town in an extraordinary match that did not finish until 5.30pm following a lengthy first-half stoppage.
The first-ever meeting between the two clubs was overshadowed by a 40-minute delay after the referee was injured on the half-hour mark and was unable to continue. Local official David Seaman was eventually found to run the line, allowing Peter Moore to take charge in the middle. The remaining 15 minutes of the first half were completed before the interval finally arrived at 4.25pm.
Before the disruption, the afternoon had started perfectly for the hosts. Just six minutes in, Scott Joseph released Victor Osobu down the left, and the winger’s pace and skill took him into the box where he calmly beat the goalkeeper to give Rovers the lead.
That advantage lasted only five minutes. Nuneaton drew level when Loyiso Recce headed home at the back post from a corner, before turning the game around in the 17th minute. James Hoskins pushed out Eesa Sawyers’ initial effort, but Kai Thomas reacted quickest to fire home the rebound.
After play resumed following the lengthy delay, Nuneaton struck twice in quick succession to seize control before half-time. In the 42nd minute, Sawyers saw his shot strike the inside of the post before James Harrison squared the ball back for him to finish. Three minutes later, Harrison curled a superb effort in from the edge of the area to make it 4–1.
Rovers showed renewed intent early in the second half, with Luke Young cutting inside from the left and sending an effort inches over the bar. Hoskins then produced two fine saves to deny Harrison and keep his side in the contest.
At the other end, Osobu had one effort blocked and sent another low and wide as Rovers searched for a way back. Their persistence paid off in the 81st minute when substitute James Smith, on for just nine minutes, scored his first goal for the club with a header from a corner.
Cole Butler went close twice in quick succession, his second shot forcing a save from Brandon Bache, but hopes of a late comeback were ended in stoppage time. Sawyers struck the post again before Rovers were caught on the break in the 93rd minute, Kyle Jardine racing clear from halfway and slotting past Hoskins to seal the win.
