Basford United 4–0 St Neots Town

Saints suffer biggest defeat under manager Cameron Mawer.

After two successive league wins, St Neots Town were handed a reality check on their midweek trip to Basford United, suffering their heaviest league defeat in over two years and the biggest under manager Cameron Mawer.

It all went wrong for the visitors from the start. Basford took the lead inside three minutes when Kieran Cummings scored with a precise angled shot. Just ten minutes later, Jordan Holland doubled the lead, unmarked and with time to finish calmly. Despite the early setback, St Neots pressed, with Connor Furlong having a shot blocked and defender Harvey Henderson forcing a full-length save from keeper Matthew Yates from a corner. Rhys Thorpe and Kieran Barnes also tried their luck, while Basford’s Jack Goodman went close near halftime, placing his shot onto the roof of the net.

The second half offered little respite. Tyler Dacre scored Basford’s third goal within four minutes of the restart, and the visitors began to look ragged. St Neots’ Michael Amaeshike picked up a caution for a late challenge. On the hour mark, Goodman added a fourth with a crisp finish after being set up by a long pass.

St Neots introduced substitutes Pharrell Anderson, making his first appearance, and Jessi Obeng, who showed flashes of energy, but the visitors were unable to break through. Their best late effort came from a Sam Willis free kick that was scrambled clear in the final minutes.

Basford controlled possession for much of the match, settling on a comfortable four-goal advantage, while St Neots struggled for confidence and finishing, ultimately succumbing to a comprehensive defeat.
