Three charities – Walk and Talk For Men, St Neots Man Cave and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity – are set to benefit after a local golf club captain raised more than £11,000 during his year in office.
St Neots-based Walk and Talk For Men, St Neots Man Cave and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity will share more than £11,000 raised by members of a local golf club.
Immediate past captain Peter Wilson exclusively revealed on Tuesday’s Your Voice on Black Cat Radio that he had raised the money during his year of office through a series of fundraising events.
These included a charity Am-Am golf day, which brought in more than £8,000, as well as a charity lunch that raised a further £2,000, alongside auctions and other activities held throughout the year.
Peter said the generosity of sponsors, local businesses and players had been “incredible” and described himself as “absolutely delighted” with the final total.
He chose the three charities because of their personal significance. Walk and Talk For Men St Neots was founded by his friend Justin Leigh, while St Neots Man Cave was established by club chairman Steve Whitney.
The third beneficiary, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, holds deep personal meaning for Peter following the loss of his friend and fellow club member Mike Devaney to cancer. He said the Royal Marsden had been “super supportive” to Mike over several years.
Walk and Talk For Men will receive £1,400 to fund two new benches along its walking routes, each featuring a plaque signposting where people can seek help and support. Additional funding will also go towards providing a mental health expert at the Citizen Hub.
St Neots Man Cave will use its share to improve workshop productivity and safety, including installing air extractors to ensure a safer working environment.
The largest single donation – £7,500 – will go to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, supporting vital cancer research and treatment trials.
Peter said that while local donations make a big difference in the community, he hopes the contribution to the Royal Marsden will also help fund life-saving research that could benefit many more people in the future.
