St Neots Firearm owners urged to hand in newly banned weapons ahead of amnesty deadline

Firearm amnesty ends this week for guns reclassified as illegal.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary are reminding residents in St Neots and surrounding villages that a national firearms amnesty is coming to an end this week.

Five types of imitation firearms, which were previously legal, have now been reclassified as illegal. Owners have until Friday 27 February to hand them in without facing prosecution.

The amnesty applies to specific Bruni BBM blank-firing pistols and revolvers, which police say can be converted into lethal weapons. After the deadline, possession of one of the banned firearms could result in a prison sentence of up to ten years.

The weapons can be surrendered at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge or Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough. Anyone unable to attend those locations is being advised to contact Cambridgeshire Police via the force website or by calling 101 to arrange safe disposal.

Police say the amnesty is designed to allow people who purchased the items legally to hand them in responsibly, while reducing the risk of the weapons being converted and used in crime.

Officers have stressed that once the amnesty period ends, anyone found in possession of one of the newly banned firearms will be committing a serious criminal offence.
