Overnight roadworks are planned on the A421 westbound between Black Cat Roundabout and Renhold in early January. The resurfacing work will take place over two nights, with a signed diversion in place while crews carry out essential repairs to improve road safety.
Drivers are being advised of important overnight roadworks planned for the A421 westbound between Black Cat Roundabout and Renhold, with closures and diversions in place while essential resurfacing work is carried out.
The work is scheduled to take place over two nights, starting on Thursday 8 January 2026, with teams working overnight between 9pm and 5am, weather permitting. Once completed, the repairs are expected to provide motorists with a safer and smoother road surface along this busy stretch of road.
Closures and Diversions
To allow the work to be carried out safely, the A421 westbound will be closed between Black Cat Roundabout and Renhold during the overnight working hours. A fully signed diversion route will be in place, guiding drivers as follows:
-
Travel southbound on the A1 (Great North Road) towards Sandy Roundabout
-
At Sandy Roundabout, take the third exit onto the A603
-
Continue along the A603, passing through Sandy Road, Bedford Road and Cambridge Road
-
Rejoin the A421 at Cardington Roundabout, where the diversion ends
Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly those making late-night or early-morning trips, and to follow diversion signage while the closures are in effect.
A map showing the diversion route will be available online to help motorists plan ahead. Road users are also reminded that all dates and times are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
Further updates will be issued if there are any changes to the planned schedule.
