St Neots Town narrowly beaten by league leaders Carlton Town

A narrow defeat as Mawer’s men push the league leaders all the way.

St Neots Town came close to causing an upset but were edged out 2-1 by runaway league leaders Carlton Town in a tight contest.

The home side, missing striker Neo Richard-Noel to injury, defended resolutely and created chances, but Carlton’s strong defence and clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive.

The visitors took the lead in the 34th minute when former St Neots player Lamin Manneh dispossessed a defender and set up Ashley Chambers to score from close range. St Neots responded but were denied by a goal-line clearance from Carlton defender Ewan Robson.

After the break, St Neots looked determined, but a late attacking change by Carlton brought immediate reward. Substitute Oliver Clark scored with his first touch, volleying spectacularly to double the visitors’ advantage. St Neots pulled a goal back in the closing minutes through Rhys Thorpe from a corner, but they could not find a way through Carlton’s well-organised defence.

The result sees Carlton maintain their commanding lead at the top of the table, while St Neots now prepare for a Hunts Senior Cup semi-final away to neighbours Eynesbury Rovers.
