Football winds down as cricket and community sport take centre stage

The local sporting spotlight is shifting from football to cricket, athletics and community events across Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire as the Spring Bank Holiday weekend gets underway.

The football season may be ending, but there is still plenty happening across the local sporting scene this Bank Holiday weekend.

Real Bedford’s remarkable promotion campaign came to a dramatic end in the Southern League Premier Central Play-Off Final, losing 4-2 after extra time to Spalding United. The defeat followed an impressive 3-1 semi-final victory over Kettering Town.

At Bedford Town, attention has already turned toward next season after Harry Smart officially took over managerial duties following Lee Bircham’s departure at the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, St Neots Town has wrapped up senior fixtures for the season, with the focus now shifting to grassroots football. The club recently hosted its annual youth tournament at the Premier Plus Stadium, attracting hundreds of teams across age groups from under-sevens to under-14s.

Huntingdon Town has also completed its Spartan South Midlands League Division One season and is now concentrating on pitch maintenance and squad planning ahead of the new campaign.

As football pauses for the summer, cricket is taking centre stage across the region.

Bedford Cricket Club’s first XI continues its strong start to the Bedfordshire Invitation Saturday League Division Three season, having already secured convincing victories over Milton Bryan Second XI and St Andrews First XI in recent weeks.

Bedfordshire County Cricket Club, however, endured a difficult spell in the NCCA Trophy, suffering defeats against Lincolnshire and Staffordshire.

This afternoon sees Bedford Cricket Club travel to Lidlington in another Bedfordshire Invitation League fixture, while village cricket clubs across Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire are in action throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

Community sport is also thriving, with hundreds of runners taking part in the latest Bedford and Huntingdon Parkruns on Saturday morning.

Attention will also turn to Bedford International Athletics Stadium over the weekend, with the venue expected to host regional track and field events as the summer athletics season gathers pace.
