It was another action-packed weekend for local football fans, with both Eynesbury Rovers and St Neots Town coming away with victories in the United Counties League.
Eynesbury Rovers edged past Daventry Town in a closely fought contest, while St Neots Town maintained their strong start to the season with a solid 2-0 win over Bourne Town. Fans were treated to competitive, end-to-end action and a display of some fine individual performances from across the squads.
Eynesbury’s victory was highlighted by key contributions from Scott Joseph and Luke Young, while St Neots’ attacking duo of Michael Amaeshike and Rhys Thorpe proved decisive in securing the points. Both sides now look ahead to their upcoming fixtures with confidence after strong performances this weekend.
Eynesbury Rovers 2 Daventry Town 1
The home side made a perfect start, taking the lead in the fifth minute. Lewis Lynn delivered a low cross into the box, allowing striker Scott Joseph to fire home his first goal for Rovers on his full home debut. Daventry responded strongly, enjoying extended spells of possession and creating several chances, including a near miss from George Mitchell-Gears and a long-range effort from James Burrows.
The visitors drew level in the 35th minute when Nathan Burrows converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Oliver Brookes. Rovers had opportunities to regain the lead before half-time, with Tom Reynolds narrowly missing from a Lewis Lynn free kick.
The decisive moment came in the 70th minute. A well-worked move down the left flank saw Harry Hurst feed Luke Young, who slotted the ball into the far corner to make it 2-1. Eynesbury had further chances to extend their lead, with Scott Joseph and Reece King both failing to convert, but held on for the win.
Next up for Rovers is a United Counties League KO Cup tie as they defend the trophy with a trip to Ilkeston Town to face Kimberley Miners Welfare on Saturday 4th October, kick-off 3.00pm.
St Neots Town 2 Bourne Town 0
St Neots Town continued their strong start to the season, securing a 2-0 victory against Bourne Town in a match that had not taken place between the two sides since the 2009/10 season. The hosts dominated possession throughout, creating numerous opportunities in the first half, though they were unable to convert, with several efforts cleared or off target.
The deadlock was broken in the 69th minute when Michael Amaeshike tapped in a close-range finish from a Rhys Thorpe cross. Nine minutes later, Rhys Thorpe doubled the lead, finishing off a cross from Connor Furlong. Despite Bourne’s introduction of substitutes, St Neots maintained control, defending well in the closing stages to secure a deserved victory.
The win lifts St Neots Town to ninth place in the league table, and manager Cameron Mawer praised his side’s performance despite some profligacy in front of goal.
