St Neots Town 1 – 0 Wellingborough Town St Neots Town made it three games unbeaten in ten days with their first home league victory since joining their new surroundings, edging out Wellingborough Town in a hard-fought encounter.
It was a particularly satisfying result for the Saints, who gained a measure of revenge after Wellingborough had completed a league double over them two seasons ago on their way to the title and promotion. This time, a single goal from Harvey Williams — his second in consecutive matches — proved enough to secure all three points, lifting St Neots into the top half of the table after a demanding start to the season.
With Kieran Barnes not fully fit after the weekend win at Coleshill, youngster Jessi Obeng was handed his first senior start against his former club, while Charlie Bowen returned from injury to strengthen the back line, allowing skipper Rob Parker to move into midfield.
St Neots began with real intent. Williams saw an early snapshot turned away before setting up Connor Furlong to head just wide. Obeng then tested the visiting goalkeeper, while Rhys Thorpe was denied by the post after a Sam Wills corner. At the other end, former Saints striker Tremaine Charles shot into the side netting, but most of the pressure came from the hosts. Bowen headed narrowly wide, and Furlong twice set up Thorpe, who couldn’t quite find the finish. In the dying seconds of the half, Furlong was again denied when his effort rattled the woodwork for the second time.
The visitors came out strongly after the break, with James Goff saving well from Jordan Crawford before Charles fired high over. But the breakthrough came on 52 minutes when Obeng’s shot wasn’t cleared and Williams pounced to lash home from ten yards.
Wellingborough pressed for an equaliser, with Franklin flashing a shot across goal and Charles continuing to use his pace to threaten, but St Neots remained resolute. The Saints themselves hit the woodwork for a third time when Furlong’s effort bounced back, while Thorpe forced another smart save on the counter.
The final minutes were tense as Williams was forced off with a knee injury, and with eleven minutes of added time played, the Saints had to dig deep. Ultimately, their resilience and attacking intent paid off, as they held firm to claim a deserved victory.
