St Neots golfers Sam Marshall and Ollie Toyer both made it through to the match play rounds of the English Amateur Championship this week, following a strong showing in the stroke play qualifying stages held at Royal Liverpool and Wallasey.
Marshall grabbed national attention after a sensational opening round at Wallasey, where he carded a bogey-free ten-under-par 62 – a new course record. His round included eight birdies and an eagle. "It was by far the best round I've ever done," said Marshall. “I’ve been in that position before and messed up, so I tried to stay patient and not think about it.” Toyer also impressed, opening with a 66 to place himself firmly among the leaders.
Their combined efforts in the second round at Royal Liverpool were enough to see both through to the final 64. But the knockout stage proved less fruitful: Marshall lost 2&1 to Monty Holcombe of Walton Heath, while Noyer was defeated 5&4 by Ringway’s Cole Self.
The English Amateur continues this week, with the remaining players battling through match play towards Sunday’s final.
