Anglian Water has warned that a hosepipe ban could still be introduced this summer, despite recent rainfall giving river and reservoir levels a short-term boost.
The East of England, including St Neots and surrounding areas, experienced the driest spring in over a century — with river levels dropping to concerning lows. Grafham Water, England’s third largest reservoir and part of our local water supply network, is currently at 84.5% capacity, a figure described by Anglian Water as “below average.”
The utility company says recent rain has helped delay restrictions, but with the forecast still uncertain, the situation remains under constant review.A
Ian Rule, Anglian Water’s Director of Water Services, said: “We don’t want to put restrictions in place unnecessarily, but protecting the environment and the region’s vital agricultural sector means we have to strike a careful balance. If the exceptionally dry weather returns, restrictions may still be needed.”
The company also noted an increase in burst pipes, caused by dry ground shifting water infrastructure — another issue their teams are actively tackling.
St Neots residents are being encouraged to use water wisely, as the region continues to feel the pressure of a changing climate.
