A suspicious device pulled from the River Great Ouse in Bedford sparked a major emergency response earlier today (Monday).
Police were called to The Embankment, near the War Memorial, after the item was recovered from the water. A 100-metre cordon was put in place while specialist officers assessed the scene.
Rothsay Road was closed at the junction with Waterloo Road, and the public were asked to avoid the area while officers waited for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to arrive.
In an update issued this afternoon, Bedfordshire Police confirmed that the device had been safely moved to a secure location, where a controlled explosion was due to be carried out. Residents living nearby were warned not to call 999 if they heard a loud bang.
The cordon has since been lifted, and the incident is now resolved. Police have thanked members of the public for their patience during the disruption.
The exact nature of the device has not been confirmed.
