Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is offering free Older Driver Workshops to help drivers aged 65 and over stay safe, confident, and independent for as long as possible.
As we age, changes to eyesight, reaction times, and mobility can gradually affect how we drive, sometimes without us realising. These two-hour, in-person sessions explore how ageing can impact our abilities on the road, the simple checks we can carry out at home to ensure we and our vehicles remain roadworthy, and how to recognise the signs that we may need to adjust our driving habits.
The workshops also provide advice on licence renewal and information about alternative ways of getting around when driving is no longer the safest option.
Importantly, these are not driving tests. There is no supervised drive and no formal assessment — instead, the focus is on relaxed, open discussion, with practical tips participants can put into use straight away. They are aimed at drivers aged 65 and over, though younger people who regularly travel with or support older drivers are also welcome.
Locally, sessions will be held at St Ives Fire Station on Tuesday 9 September and at Cambourne Fire Station on Tuesday 21 October. For those unable to attend in person, online workshops will take place on 11 September and 22 October
The fire service hopes the workshops will not only boost confidence for older drivers but also help families have those sometimes-tricky conversations about staying safe behind the wheel.
