Around 8,500 children in Central Bedfordshire will receive supermarket vouchers over the summer holidays, helping families cover food costs while schools are closed.
Eligible families will get £17.50 per child, per week, to spend at supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Waitrose.
The support is funded by the government’s Household Support Fund, set up to help vulnerable households with essentials such as food and energy. Central Bedfordshire Council has contacted eligible families directly.
The Council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is also running again this summer, offering free activities for children who receive free school meals. Those attending will also receive lunch and snacks during the day.
Councillor Steve Owen, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said the scheme helps relieve financial pressure for families and ensures children don’t miss out during the holidays. Families eligible for the HAF scheme or supermarket vouchers will have been contacted directly by the Council.
