The St Neots community is mourning alongside the nation after the devastating news that two firefighters and a member of the public lost their lives during a major blaze at a business park in Bicester, Oxfordshire, on Thursday.
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers St Neots and the surrounding area, has expressed its sorrow at the tragic incident.
In a statement, the service said:
“We are devastated to hear of the loss of two firefighters and a member of the public during an incident in Bicester.
Our thoughts are with all those involved, and their family, friends and colleagues, and everyone at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
As a mark of respect, flags are being flown at half-mast across fire stations in Cambridgeshire, including locally in St Neots.
One of the firefighters who died was a London Fire Brigade leading firefighter, serving with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service on a retained basis. Two more firefighters are being treated for serious injuries in hospital.
The blaze broke out at Bicester Motion, a business park on the edge of the Oxfordshire town, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute on social media, calling the deaths “devastating news” and sending his condolences to the families and colleagues of those who died.
