A man from St Neots has been cleared of serious assault allegations after his ex-partner admitted making up the claims.
Fleur Smith, 21, from Huntingdon, told police in February last year that her former partner had attacked her on a footpath in Huntingdon the previous month. She claimed she had suffered facial injuries, a fractured collarbone, bruised ribs and more.
However, medical reports did not support her account — and further enquiries revealed the man had been at home in St Neots with his current partner at the time. He also hadn’t spoken to Smith since 2021.
Smith later admitted fabricating the story, including showing a fake support letter and falsely telling others her ex had served prison time. She was arrested in May 2023.
At Peterborough Crown Court this week (30 June), Smith was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months. She must also complete 175 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation programme after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.
Detectives praised the victim for his bravery in helping police uncover the truth, saying the case shows how seriously false accusations are treated.
