Sandy Heath transmitter marks 60 years of keeping the region connected

Sandy Heath transmitter, a key part of the UK’s broadcast network, has celebrated 60 years of continuous service.

The site, which delivers television and radio services to more than one million people across the South East, is one of the country’s most significant transmission facilities. Owned and operated by Arqiva, Sandy Heath is part of a network of around 1,400 sites that together deliver TV and radio to over 99% of the UK, as well as supporting mobile connectivity and data services.

In operation since 1965, Sandy Heath has evolved from analogue to digital broadcasting, with ongoing upgrades improving energy efficiency, reliability, and introducing new services such as mobile telecoms and smart metering. The transmitter also has inbuilt resilience to ensure the public can continue to receive services even in times of national emergency.

Dom Wedgwood, Arqiva’s Chief Technology Officer, said:

“For 60 years this site has been in great service to the community and absolutely key to communications and services for the whole nation. Sandy Heath is going to play an important part in the future too, with new technologies and new services for the community.”

Sandy Town Mayor, Councillor Joanna Hewitt, said:

“We see it every day, but many people don’t realise how important it is. Without it, thousands wouldn’t be able to access TV or radio. In a national crisis, this mast will provide vital information – you only have to look at Spain recently to see how essential that is.”

Arqiva says the transmitter will continue to evolve to meet future needs, from broadcasting to supporting smart technologies such as utility metering and connected devices.
