Drivers using the A1 southbound approach to the Black Cat roundabout could soon face police enforcement action, as National Highways looks to crack down on motorists crossing white lines to skip queues.
The move is being considered in response to growing concerns and complaints about congestion and dangerous driving near the major roadworks taking place at the busy Bedfordshire junction.
The Black Cat roundabout is currently undergoing a major transformation into a three-tier junction — part of a multi-million-pound upgrade to improve traffic flow between the A1, A421 and A428. Temporary traffic signals have been installed to manage movements from the A1 southbound onto the A421 westbound, Bedford Road, and A1 northbound.
National Highways says the lights are already operating at maximum capacity, with up to 75% of the green-light time — around 105 seconds — prioritised for this busy route.
Some motorists have suggested separating traffic further back on the A1 to help reduce delays, but this has been ruled out due to the proximity of service stations and the need to maintain emergency access. However, enforcement is being explored to tackle drivers who dangerously cross white lines to jump queues.
A spokesperson for National Highways said:
“We are working with the police on potential enforcement options for drivers crossing the white lines improperly. We appreciate the patience of road users as we deliver this complex upgrade and continue doing all we can to minimise disruption while keeping people moving.”
