Poundland has confirmed that its store on Midland Road in Bedford will close permanently next month. The last day of trading in Bedford will be Saturday, August 17.
The company has said that the Bedford branch is one of 25 stores across the UK set to shut their doors in August, as part of a wider recovery and restructuring programme. The closure comes less than a year after the store opened in October 2023, taking over the former Tesco premises. It followed the earlier closures of two other Poundland stores in the town.
In total, 68 Poundland stores are expected to close, with further shutdowns linked to the end of lease agreements. Staff at the Bedford site were informed of the decision last month, the retailer said.
Poundland’s retail director, Darren MacDonald, described the move as “sincerely regrettable,” but said it was a necessary part of ensuring the long-term future of the business.
“It is of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that’s necessary if we’re to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores,” he said.
“While our anticipated network of around 650–700 stores remains a sizeable one, we entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when one nearby closes.”
Mr MacDonald added that the company is supporting affected staff through a formal consultation process and will explore opportunities for redeployment.
