The Mayor of St Neots, Cllr Richard Slade, has announced the local causes he’ll be supporting during his second term in office—and this year, sport is taking centre stage.
Following the success of last year’s fundraising, which raised nearly £10,000 for local theatre groups, the Mayor has turned his attention to some of the town’s long-standing sports clubs, selecting St Neots Hockey Club, St Neots Cycling Club, and New Saints Boxing Club as his three chosen charities for 2025.
“We have so many brilliant clubs here in St Neots, which made choosing just three a very difficult decision,” said Cllr Slade. “But these clubs need our support – not just financially, but also in spirit – to help them not only survive but thrive.”
A nod to history and community
Each club brings a deep-rooted legacy to the local sporting scene:
- St Neots Hockey Club, founded from women’s and men’s teams dating back to 1898 and 1901, has grown from its bandy-inspired beginnings into a vibrant and inclusive modern club.
- St Neots Cycling Club, established in 1887, is one of the town’s longest-running organisations, offering welcoming road cycling activities for riders of all ages and abilities.
- New Saints Boxing Club supports local young people by using the discipline of boxing to build confidence, resilience and community values in a safe and supportive environment.
Fundraising events
To raise money across the year, the Mayor will lead on several community fundraising events, including the St Neots Dragon Boat Festival, the Mayor’s Charity Golf Day, and a series of smaller, locally organised activities.
A message of thanks
Responding to the announcement, St Neots Hockey Club shared a message of appreciation online:
“On behalf of all the members of St Neots Hockey Club I would like to say a big thank you to the Mayor for supporting the club in our drive to improve facilities and ensure we can continue to offer community-based sport to all ages in St Neots.” – Iain Moor, Club President
