Fire crews remain on scene this evening (Saturday 5 July) at a major blaze at the Elstow Waste Transfer Site near Bedford, more than 20 hours after the fire first broke out.
The incident, which began just before 9pm on Friday night, has seen a significant emergency response involving Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, Bedfordshire Police, the Environment Agency, the UK Health Security Agency, and Bedford Borough Council.
Controlled Burn and Ongoing Monitoring
A controlled burn strategy is being implemented to manage the fire safely, with crews expected to remain on-site throughout the weekend. The strategy and response will be reviewed again on Sunday 6 July.
While the fire is not being treated as deliberate at this stage, its impact is being closely monitored.
Road Closures and Disruption
The A6 remains closed between Wixams and the A421, and diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and check for updates before travelling. Authorities will review the road closures on Sunday morning.
Health and Safety Advice
The smoke plume generated by the fire continues to be monitored for air quality by both the Fire Service and the UK Health Security Agency.
Residents in nearby areas, including Elstow, Wixams, and parts of south Bedford, are being urged to:
- Keep windows and doors closed
