Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and expect disruption as major road closures are in force around the Black Cat roundabout this weekend.
In short, the Black Cat Roundabout is closed to all traffic from all routes, except the southbound A1, until 5am Monday 18 August.
The closure therefore means the following routes will be closed:
- A421 eastbound between Cardington Interchange and the Black Cat
- A421 westbound between the Black Cat and Renhold Interchange
- A1 northbound between Tempsford and Wyboston
- Bedford Road, though Roxton Garden Centre remains open as usual
Highways say diversion routes – which include the A603, the A1, St Neots Road, and the A428 at St Neots – are expected to be very busy with their advice being to “avoid the area as much as possible, or expect significant delays”.
The closures are needed to allow work on the £1bn A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet upgrade.
New changes from Monday 18th August
From Monday 18 August, drivers will notice new road layouts at the Black Cat. These include a free-flow link from the A421 eastbound to the A1 northbound, a new A421 westbound on-slip, and a realigned Bedford Road.
Anyone travelling eastbound on the A421 will now be able to bypass the roundabout completely and join the A1 northbound directly.
The northern section of the roundabout will remain closed, meaning there’s still no direct link from the A421 onto the A1 southbound.
