Major Changes Coming to Black Cat Roundabout from Tuesday 8th July

Changes to Black Cat Roundabout from Tuesday 8th July.

Drivers are being warned of significant changes at the Black Cat roundabout from Monday 8 July 2025, as construction moves forward on the long-awaited A421 flyover bridge and a new three-tier junction.

Drivers are being warned of significant changes at the Black Cat roundabout from Tuesday 8th July 2025, as construction continues on the new A421 flyover bridge and three-tier junction.

As part of the next phase of work, the northern section of the roundabout will close, and new traffic measures will be introduced:

  • A421 eastbound traffic will only be able to join the A1 northbound. Drivers wishing to travel south will need to continue north to Wyboston and loop back, or exit at Cardington and follow the A603 towards Sandy.

  • The A1 southbound approach to the roundabout will be reduced to three lanes, with a concrete barrier installed to keep traffic safely separated and in the correct lane through the junction.

  • There will be no changes for drivers travelling northbound on the A1.

  • The traffic lights on the A1 southbound approach will be removed once the northern part of the roundabout is closed, which is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

These works are part of the wider A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet upgrade, designed to ease congestion, improve safety, and create more reliable journey times across the region.
