Work continues on the major upgrade to the A428, with significant changes coming to the layout near Caxton Gibbet as part of the new dual carriageway development. These changes mark another milestone in the transformation of the road network between the Caxton Gibbet and the Black Cat roundabout.
From Monday 2 June, traffic will be redirected onto a newly constructed stretch of road, which runs north of the existing A428. This realignment will connect directly with the new roundabout currently being built at Caxton Gibbet, improving access and journey flow through the area.
At the new roundabout, drivers will have the option to join the A1198 or continue their journey along the A428, now following its updated path. Once traffic is moved onto this new section, the old section of the A428 will be permanently closed and removed to make way for further works.
This diversion is part of the wider A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet improvement scheme, which includes the creation of a new A421 dual carriageway. The dual carriageway is scheduled to open in spring 2027, with Caxton Gibbet set to feature a brand-new bridge carrying traffic overhead. Once completed, this junction will offer on and off-slip roads to allow seamless connections between routes.
