Huntingdonshire District Council uncovers £437,000 in fraud

Huntingdonshire District Council Offices

Fraud investigations by Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) have uncovered more than £437,000 in wrongly claimed support over the past year.

The council’s Corporate Fraud Team identified cases across a range of services, including Council Tax Discounts, Council Tax Support, housing tenancy fraud, and the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

The biggest discovery involved 144 cases where residents were wrongly receiving the Council Tax Single Person Discount. That amounted to £236,961, which the council is now recovering.

The team also uncovered five cases of housing tenancy fraud, which led to the recovery of three social housing properties. These homes have now been reallocated to families in genuine need.

In addition, misuse of the Homes for Ukraine scheme was uncovered, including one case which resulted in prosecution. The person involved was ordered to repay £9,900 to the council.

Executive Leader, Cllr Sarah Conboy, said:

“Schemes like the Council Tax Support Scheme are vital lifelines for many of our residents, so it is always disappointing to see them misused. I commend our fraud team for their thorough work in identifying these cases and ensuring that support reaches those who truly need it.”

Residents who suspect fraud can report it confidentially to the council’s Corporate Fraud Team.
