Plans to install five permanent waterlodges at Buckden Marina, on the edge of St Neots, have been withdrawn following strong opposition from local residents.
The proposals, submitted to Huntingdonshire District Council by Castle Marinas, sought permission for five high-specification “holiday units” to be moored on standard one-year contracts. The marina, which provides direct access to the River Great Ouse, currently has 214 berths for cruisers and narrowboats.
According to documents submitted with the application, the waterlodges would have included open-plan living spaces, kitchens, two double bedrooms, a separate shower and toilet, and open deck areas.
Castle Marinas claimed the lodges would cause “no impact or harm within the existing setting.”
However, many residents disagreed, raising concerns about the impact on the character of the area.
One objector described the development as “totally out of keeping,” adding: “These proposed water lodges are not mobile, being unable to move under their own power, are too tall and too wide to fit through the immediate located locks.”
Others feared the marina would be turned into a “floating caravan park.”
