Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Opens Recruitment for Full-Time Roles

Cambridgeshire Fire Recruiting Firefighters

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service – which covers St Neots Fire Station – has officially opened applications for new wholetime firefighters, with the recruitment window now open until Wednesday 14 August.

The process launched at midday on Monday 14 July, and the service is encouraging people from all backgrounds to consider a career that’s as rewarding as it is demanding.

Firefighters play a vital role in St Neots and across the county – not just responding to emergencies, but also engaging with the public, educating communities on fire safety, carrying out home visits, and supporting flood response, road traffic collisions and rescue situations.

More Than Just Fighting Fires

While dramatic fire scenes are what many associate with the role, today’s firefighters are skilled professionals trained to deal with a wide range of emergency situations. They provide lifesaving care in the critical moments before paramedics arrive, assist in rescues from water and height, and play a key part in community protection and prevention work.

In St Neots, firefighters also regularly work with local schools, community groups and businesses to promote safety and build resilience in the community.

What’s Involved in the Application?

Once the initial application is in, shortlisted candidates will face a thorough selection process, including:

  • Online aptitude tests
  • A fitness and swimming test
  • Medical assessments
  • Occupational ability assessments

The process is designed to ensure new recruits meet the physical and mental demands of the job while demonstrating strong teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

Support for Applicants

In the run-up to the recruitment launch, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service hosted a series of in-person and online information evenings, giving potential applicants the chance to hear from current firefighters and ask questions about the role, training, shift patterns, and what life on the job is really like.

The service is particularly keen to hear from applicants who may not have considered firefighting as a career before. Whether you’re changing careers, just starting out, or simply looking to give something back to your community, this could be your opportunity.
