The Black Cat Roundabout has reopened this morning (Monday) with a brand-new look following a full weekend closure for major re-alignment works.
Contractors closed the junction from Friday evening until just after 5am today to carry out the changes, which mark the next step in construction of the new flyover.
Among the biggest changes for motorists:
-
Eastbound A428 traffic now flows directly onto the A1 northbound via a new free-flow lane.
-
The A421 westbound has a new on-slip from the roundabout.
-
The Bedford Road from Roxton has been realigned to tie in with the new layout.
The work is part of the National Highways upgrade of the Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet route, which will eventually see the busy roundabout replaced with a three-level junction and new dual carriageway.
Anne-Marie Rogers, Senior Project Manager, told Black Cat Radio that the weekend’s works went smoothly and that the changes should help keep traffic moving as the wider project continues.
