Bedfordshire Firefighters Join Battle Against Huge Dorset Heath Fire

Fire crews from Bedfordshire have been sent nearly 150 miles to help tackle a massive heath fire in Dorset – in an area popular with holidaymakers from our region.

A major incident was declared on Saturday after a large blaze broke out near the village of Holt, on the edge of the New Forest. Strong winds caused the flames to spread rapidly, burning across 69 hectares of heathland.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service says crews worked tirelessly to protect homes, saving at least one property from the advancing flames. They continue to deal with flare-ups and hotspots using a range of equipment including multiple pumping appliances, 4x4 vehicles, water carriers, and a high-volume pump.

With hot weather forecast, the National Trust is cutting additional firebreaks as a precaution. Officials say recent wildfires in the area are believed to have been started deliberately, and police are appealing for information.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it has sent a team and a Rural Water Tender to Wimborne in response to a national mutual aid request. They’ve joined firefighters from across the UK in the ongoing operation to bring the fire under control.
