Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service Warns of Dangers from Mixing Household Cleaners

Fire service warn residents not to mix household chemicals to try and make them more effective.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) has issued a critical safety warning after responding to multiple incidents involving hazardous chemical reactions caused by mixing common household cleaning products.

Across the county, fire crews have attended several emergencies where everyday cleaning routines have turned dangerous. When certain products—such as bleach, toilet cleaners, and ammonia-based sprays—are combined, they can produce toxic gases that pose serious health risks, including respiratory distress, poisoning, or even death.

Group Commander Mark Garrett of BFRS explained:

“Many people mistakenly believe that mixing cleaning products makes them more effective, but this is a potentially deadly error. Even standard, supermarket-bought items can release harmful fumes when combined. It’s essential to always read the labels, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and never mix different products.”

The hazardous fumes created can rapidly affect breathing and overall health, requiring specialist response teams equipped to safely manage chemical incidents.

BFRS advises residents that if they accidentally mix cleaning chemicals and begin to feel unwell—such as experiencing coughing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or eye irritation—they should immediately leave the area and call 999 for emergency assistance.

This warning serves as an important reminder to take care when using household cleaning products and to treat them with the respect they deserve.
