An amber heat-health alert has been issued for the East of England – including St Neots and Bedford – with temperatures set to climb as high as 33°C over the next two days. The warning, issued by the UK Health Security Agency in partnership with the Met Office, remains in place until Wednesday, 13 August.
Today’s forecast for St Neots predicts clear sunshine all day, light winds and occasional gusts, with no respite from the heat during peak afternoon hours. The government is urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion, dehydration and heatstroke. Advice includes staying out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, keeping homes cool by closing blinds and curtains, and drinking plenty of fluids.
While schools are on their summer break, some nurseries in the area have asked parents who are able to keep children at home to do so, helping staff manage the hot conditions and keep children cool.
The UKHSA also recommends wearing loose, light clothing and applying sunscreen if outdoors, checking on vulnerable friends and neighbours, and knowing the signs of heat-related illness. Public buildings such as libraries, supermarkets or places of worship may offer cooler conditions for those struggling at home.
The alert comes as much of southern and central England experiences yellow or amber warnings for heat. Residents are advised to follow official guidance and monitor local forecasts for updates.
