The significant barn fire at Sundown Straw Products in Tilbrook has now been concluded following a major response by fire crews.
Crews from Kimbolton were first on the scene around 2am on Friday 17 October, managing the initial response while additional pumps from Huntingdon, St Neots, St Ives, Yaxley, and the water carrier from Ramsey arrived, alongside support from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue. The fire involved around 300 tonnes of straw bales.
At the time, a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“This is a complex incident involving a large quantity of straw, so it will continue to burn for the next couple of days. Our crews are working tirelessly to extinguish the fire, and we thank residents for their patience and understanding while we bring the situation under control.”

Firefighters brought the blaze under control soon after arriving and spent the following days extinguishing remaining flames and monitoring the site to prevent any risk of re-ignition. A teleporter was used to lift straw out of the barn so crews could break it up and douse smouldering material.
The fire service has confirmed that the incident is now fully concluded and that the cause of the fire was accidental.
A spokesperson said:
“We thank our local residents for their support and for staying safe by keeping doors and windows closed during the worst of the smoke.”

Sundown Straw Products, which manufactures purpose-made horse bedding, said:
“The fire affected one of our straw storage barns and we are incredibly grateful to all the firefighters who responded. The situation is under control. Thankfully, nobody was injured and our processing plant was unaffected.”
