Steam Locomotive ‘Tornado’ to Pass Through St Neots on Saturday 14th June

Steam locomotive ‘Tornado’ to pass through St Neots.

The steam locomotive Tornado will pass through St Neots twice on Saturday 14th June, offering a rare chance to witness a working steam engine in full flight.

Built from scratch and completed in 2008, Tornado combines historic design with modern engineering. The locomotive is capable of reaching 100mph—a feat it achieved during night-time tests in 2017—and is the first steam engine to reach such speeds in Britain since the 1960s.

Tornado carries 7.5 tons of coal and 6,200 gallons of water, burning around 50 pounds of coal and evaporating 66 gallons of water every minute when running at full power.

The locomotive will be hauling a special excursion from London to Skegness, passing through St Neots at speed in the morning shortly after departing Stevenage at 8:20am. It will return in the evening, leaving Peterborough at 7:30pm and passing through St Neots soon after.
