A redundant car showroom in St Neots has been transformed into a striking tribute to a Huntingdonshire man, thanks to the talent of professional artist Dan Wilson.
The former TC Harrison showroom on Cambridge Street now features a life-like portrait of Dan’s late grandfather, Ken Irons. Born in Eynesbury and spending most of his life in Hail Weston, Ken passed away in 2002. Dan, who lives in Chicago with his wife Lindsay, created the piece using spray cans during a recent visit home.
Dan’s journey in art began alongside his studies in photography at Derby University, where he captured the original image of Ken for his portfolio. Following a stint as a local press photographer, Dan moved into professional art full-time after relocating to the US. He now has a strong reputation and regularly takes commissions.
Dan’s mum, Joy Wilson, explained the inspiration behind the work:
“Dan always looks for somewhere to do a piece of artwork in the town when he comes home. It was suggested that the former garage wall would make an ideal place for him to work. He had a few ideas, but decided he wanted to paint his granddad.”
The resulting piece, titled Granddad, has quickly captured attention online. Some have questioned whether it constitutes graffiti, but Joy added:
“Dan knew the building was not going to stay, but he just wanted to do something nice for the town while he was here. The building is currently not being used and looks a bit run-down, so the portrait is a way of brightening it.”
Daniel Said "Because it's being knocked down, the developers were fine with it, it's only ever intended to be temporary."
