Police are urging people to stay vigilant when using their mobile phones in public, following a recent spate of thefts in Cambridge involving offenders on e-bikes and e-scooters.
The incidents, which took place between Saturday and yesterday (10 November), involved suspects dressed in black clothing with face coverings, approaching victims from behind and snatching phones before making a quick escape.
Inspector Shawn Emms said:
“We understand these incidents are concerning for the community. An investigation is ongoing along with high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols of the areas. We urge anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour or has information to contact us immediately.”
Officers are advising pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings when walking with a phone in hand, especially near cycle routes and pavements where offenders can approach at speed.
iPhone users are also encouraged to consider disabling the Control Centre on the locked screen to prevent thieves switching devices into aeroplane mode, which can make them harder to track.
Insp Emms added:
“Where possible, keep your phone out of sight when not in use and be cautious when using it in public. Store your phone in a zipped bag or pocket and keep it close to you.”
