Cambridgeshire Constabulary has welcomed its new Chief Constable, Simon Megicks, who officially took up the role on Sunday, 28 September, succeeding Nick Dean.
Simon, 54, brings 29 years of policing experience and is believed to be the only officer in recent history to have started his career in Cambridgeshire and gone on to reach the rank of Chief Constable. He first joined the force in 1996, working across local policing, public protection and corporate services.
Reflecting on his appointment, he said:
"I’m thrilled to take up the post of Chief Constable in the force where I started my career 29 years ago. While a lot has stayed the same, I am looking forward to learning what has changed in the 10 years since I was last here, and about how the force has developed and grown to meet the needs of the people and communities we serve."
Simon said one of his immediate priorities is to meet officers and staff to better understand the pressures they face.
He also acknowledged the financial challenges facing policing.
"I am very much aware of the budget constraints policing faces, now and in the coming years, and the impact that has on the ability of the team to do a good job, as well as on staff morale."
Simon will work closely with Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston to support the delivery of the Police and Crime Plan.
Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston welcomed the appointment, adding:
"As a local man, Simon is well placed to understand the needs of our communities. I very much look forward to working with him."
Simon has also emphasised the importance of partnership working and says he intends to take time to get reacquainted with the force and its people, while continuing the focus on keeping communities across Cambridgeshire safe.
