Huntingdonshire District Council Sees Big Rise in Climate Action Score

Huntingdonshire District Council has recorded a significant improvement in its latest Climate Action Scorecard, achieving an overall score of 40% in the 2025 assessment — up from 27% in 2023.

The increase reflects the council’s growing commitment to tackling climate change and placing sustainability at the heart of its work.

Key improvements were seen across several areas. The biodiversity category saw a 30-point jump, thanks in large part to the council’s Biodiversity for All programme, which aims to protect and restore natural habitats across the district.

Progress in the buildings and heating category was also notable, with the council now scoring 67%, up 19 points. This reflects recent leisure centre retrofit projects and the Net Zero Villages initiative, which supports communities in reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Cllr Lara Davenport-Ray, Executive Councillor for Climate, Transformation and Workforce, said:

“It’s really encouraging to see our work reflected in these results. This is down to the commitment of our staff, the support of our partners, and the energy of local residents helping to drive real change. We know there’s still much more to do, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

The council says it will use the Scorecard findings to guide its next steps and ensure climate action continues to be embedded across all departments.

About the Scorecard

The Climate Action Scorecard, compiled by Climate Emergency UK, evaluates every local authority on the actions taken towards achieving net zero. Councils are assessed across seven categories and 93 criteria, with input from more than 90 organisations and individuals.

The most recent round of scoring was based on activity from 1 January 2020 to 31 October 2024.

  • Bedford Borough Council – 41%

  • Central Bedfordshire Council – 40%
